Jan Garbarek Group

  • Hovedscenen - Kulturhuset i Tromsø (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Nobody plays the Saxophone quite like Jan Garbarek. His sound has become an unmistakable trademark and this sound for some time now has acquired another dimension than what is generally understood as Jazz. Innumerable record releases, concerts in the most significant concert-halls throughout the world, the many years he collaborated with Keith Jarrett or his unprecedented work with the Hilliard Ensemble have made this unique Saxophonist popular across all musical genres and borders.

It has never been of any interest to him that critics need to find convenient labels to sort people out into musical categories. Garbarek eludes this attempt. You find his work in Jazz, Classic and Pop-charts. Since the early days of the Munich cult label ECM he has been one of its most successful representatives.

The sound alone certainly does not make the music. In his compositions and improvisations Jan Garbarek is a master of unbelievable tuneful music that cuts right into our soul. Expansive sound spaces stretch from absolute tranquility to expressive rapture, radiating an astounding sense of peace that however does not allow a moment of boredom. His concerts develop in a highly organic manner providing a wide ark of rising tension. This music breathes and provides space to breathe. This music sounds simple and complex at the same time. This music is hymnal and sparse, playful and serious, immersed and exceptionally open, intense rather than sentimental.

On his current tour Jan Garbarek will be accompanied by his keyboardist of many years, Rainer Brüninghaus, the e-bassist from Brazil, Yuri Daniel and master drummer Trilok Gurtu from India. These musicians, all of them technically highly trained, guarantee that the mutual journey will offer an extraordinary concert experience filled with magical moments. An unmistakable sense for density and ambience generates a sound space that leaves traces in ones deepest self - a sensual sensation.

Jan Garbarek (Saxophone), Rainer Brüninghaus (piano), Yuri Daniel (bass), Trilok Gurtu (percussion).

The doors open at 6:30PM. The concert starts at 7:30PM. Seated tickets. No age limit.

Price: 890 NOK (ordinary), 790 NOK (students, seniors)

Welcome to Hildr's beautiful backyard and a groovy evening with Rohey followed by Beady Belle.

Rohey 8PM

With a wall-to-wall 21st century freshness, light years past any concept of vogue, or any linear genre lines, Norwegian quartet Rohey deliver music that bristles with energy and honesty, that grooves with the best funk, that has deep soul roots while keeping an eye on the broad expanse of a golden future. Lead vocalist Rohey Taalah brings all the emotional complexity you would expect of a classic jazz or soul singer (and can withstand comparison with any with ease). Ivan Blomqvist's keys play a dual role of laying down old school sonics, while bringing a retrofuturistic hyper-urban tone (akin to British IDM), while Kristian B. Jacobsen (bass) and Henrik Lødøen (drums) create a jazz-soul-funk hybrid rhythm section that ducks and weaves with supreme artfulness.

Rohey have toured extensively throughout Scandinavia, taking in just about every major Jazz festival along the way. The band also joined as support act for soul legend and genre pioneer Bernhoft for his grand norwegian tour during the fall of 2016. With the release of "A Million Things" on Jazzland Recordings in early 2017, their path can be expected to take them ever further: music this good can't be kept secret for long. "A Million Things" performs a balancing act that most pop artists have forgotten in these days of studio micro-editing: how to write and play a song with full and sincere conviction, while enjoying an artful expressiveness without making things unnecessarily difficult for the audience. This has been borne out by their nomination for 'Best Single' at
the Scandinavian Soul Awards in 2015.

"Rohey's presence was clear. All eyes were on her and all ears were on the band. Somehow, this felt old school. A throwback to the days of a dynamic band with an engaging singer. Especially young people should take note of this. Music is alive outside the internet and Rohey are keeping it real."

Shining

«A Study in Co-ordinated Whiplash!’»

So wrote The New York Times when Norwegian Blackjazz band Shining arrived on the international scene wielding the sort of musical ‘weaponry’ that, frankly, hadn’t been seen before – a mighty Nordic hammer comprised of a new and singularly hard alloy: One part aggressive metal, one part stinging free jazz, the whole thing solidified with a fine industrial polish.

Few bands, if any, have traveled as far musically as this band. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist, vocalist & songwriter Jørgen Munkeby (skilled saxophonist & guitarist, a graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music), Shining started their unique musical trajectory as a purely acoustic jazz quartet in the vein of the late John Coltrane, releasing the albums ‘Where The Ragged People Go’ and ‘Sweet Shanghai Devil’ in 2001 & 2003 respectively; after this, they turned their hand to more art-rock studio projects, specifically ‘In The Kingdom Of Kitsch You Will Be A Monster’ (2005) and ‘Grindstone’ (2007), before truly forging their path with the ‘Blackjazz’ album in 2010; this release was both genre-defying and genre-defining, mixing progressive, technical metal, jazz, avant-garde and experimental sounds with cutting-edge visuals and blazing onstage performances, paving the way for ‘Live Blackjazz’ in 2011 and studio outing ‘One One One’ in 2013, both exploring and empowering this freshly-hewn Blackjazz universe.

The doors open at 9PM. The concert starts at 10PM. Age limit 18+

Helge Lien Trio

Having built up loyal audiences, perhaps most notably in Germany and Japan, the Helge Lien Trio bring with them their finely poised tunes that balance impressive virtuosity with inherent accessibility, and introspective lyricism with buoyant expressionism to their concerts around the world.

Helge Lien, has developed his very own unmistakable style of trio playing. With instinctive sureness, he and his musicians have developed their own take on chamber jazz that stands out through its harmonically complex tone colours. Building on Bill Evans’ lyrical power and the exhilaratingly melancholic playing of Esbjörn Svensson, Lien, in constant dialogue with Frode Berg (bass) & Per Oddvar Johansen (drums), creates distinct moods in recorded and live settings alike.

Doubtlessly, pianist Helge Lien, who is very skilled at playing to the gallery with his modal piano art, is one of the most exciting young talents in Scandinavia. Playing their way into the hearts of a steadily growing circle of listeners with classic-impressionistic patterns and rhythmical-melodic jazz, this trio’s resourcefulness seems to truly know no bounds.

Ellen Andrea Wang has distinguished herself as an inventive artist, blending genres in new and unprecedented ways and she recently joined drum legend Manu Katchés band.

She is also the leader of the band Pixel who have achieved great national and international success and acclaim, even winning an award at UK Music Video Awards for Wang’s composition «Call Me».

Ellen Andrea hails from a musical family. She spent years studying violin and piano before she picked up the double bass at the age of 17 and quickly made it her own. A graduate of Oslo’s Norwegian Academy of Music, she gained widespread attention in Norway with the release of 2010’s Norwegian Song 3, when she was pegged as a rising bass star who held her own in the company of established masters like pianist Dag Arnesen, drummer Pål Thowsen and trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg.

Now, with her debut album Diving, she plunges into the roles as a solo artist, bassist, singer, songwriter and producer, all at once.

Her trio includes some of Norway’s most talented musicians; Andreas Ulvo (Mathias Eick) on keys and Erland Dahlen (Nils Petter Molvær, Eivind Aarseth) on drums, who put their personal signature on the material.

Her debut album Diving has a tasteful blend of jazz and pop elements, and she manages to balance the lyrical with the rough, the acoustic with the electric and creating an urban sound with a traditional configuration; bass, drums and piano. The song «Follow Me» is an example of Wang luring people into more candid jazz through build-up and vocal based melody lines.

Norwegian press has praised her debut album and she was named 2014’s Bassist Of The Year in the newspaper Dagsavisen. «This trio, this music and Ellen Andrea Wang can reach almost as far as they would like» Tor Hammerø, Side 2.

Ellen Andrea Wang (double bass & vocals), Andreas Ulvo (keys), Erland Dahlen (drums).

The doors open at 8PM. The concert starts at 9PM. Age limit 18+.

Bugge Wesseltoft New Conception Of Jazz

  • Hovedscenen - Kulturhuset i Tromsø (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Bugge Wesseltofts «New Conception of Jazz» resurfaces in 2016 with a new generation of jazz musicians.

Not many Norwegian musicians can say they left their mark on the European jazz scene in the 1990s and 2000s, but Bugge Wesseltoft surely did with his popular project «New Conception of Jazz». Together with key musicians such as Erik Truffaz French and Nils Petter Molvær he mixed electronic elements with jazz. New Conception of Jazz has as a result become a concept in itself within the electronic jazz scene.

After 400 concerts worldwide and recordings by New Conception of Jazz (1996) and Moving (2001), the band took a break in 2006. Ten years after Bugge Wesseltoft breathes new life into the project again – this time with a whole new generation of young musicians.

The audience can expect to hear both new and old material when New Conception of Jazz enters the stage at Tromsø Jazzfestival. One thing is for certain; it’s danceable, groovy and electric!

The doors open at 6PM. Seated tickets. No age limit.
